Adult social care and our increasingly ageing population are high on the list of topics being discussed in County Halls across the country. When Staffordshire County Council began planning for its future provision, it was clear that radical solutions and a fair amount of imagination were needed.

Philip Atkins, Leader of Staffordshire County Council, speaking at the opening of Saltbank Court supported housing scheme, takes up the story:

Staffordshire County Council utilised the Homes & Communities Agency Selection Panel to find a suitable developer and housing association partner and The Wrekin Housing Trust was selected for the role.

The location identified for this innovative development was a brown field site in a residential area just north of Stafford Town Centre. PJB Associates undertook two years of detailed analysis of community need and infrastructure requirements to underpin future service strategy. This culminated in the concept design.
In January 2013, Galliford Try were named as the construction partner for the project.

What’s striking is the way so many elements have been brought together within the limitations of a single site boundary. A linear design provides avenues and walkways that give an open feel and encourage pedestrian traffic across the site. The range of services may be varied but there’s logic to the layout. From preventative health to respite, from general needs housing to extra care; not so much a model village but a model means of serving community needs across generations.

Jean Teichmann Head of the Development Consultancy at The Wrekin Housing Trust outlines the first stages of the build:

Northfield Village is a bold approach to integrating services through partnership working and Philip Atkins feels it's certainly worth the effort:
